Lady Science is accepting pitches for a special series on gender, sports, and science, technology and medicine. Pieces can be historical or contemporary, and could even include personal elements, but they should fit well with Lady Science’s critical approach to the ways that gender intersects with science, technology and medicine and pay attention to power and marginalization.
Potential topics might include, but are absolutely not limited to, statistics and metrics in professional sports, the cultural history of exercise cultures, the professionalization of sports medicine, space and place in live sporting events, the marginalization of women fans, LGBTQIA representation in professional sports, sports technologies, domestic abuse and toxic masculinity/racism/homophobia in professional sports, performance enhancing drugs, nationalism and militarization in sports, or any topic that explores the intersection of sports, science, and gender.
We especially encourage people who have been historically marginalized by sports writing and larger sports culture, as well as people who may not have had an opportunity to write about sports before, to pitch. Pieces will run throughout the month of October. We pay $50, and we’re looking for pieces 600-1000 words.
Deadline for pitches: September 1
Accepted drafts due: September 15
Send a 1-2 paragraph pitch (no more than 3 short paragraphs!), links to a few clips, and a short introduction to email@example.com. DO NOT send complete drafts, pitches only please! Put Sports Series in the subject line.
